My son hit a parked car – need auto insurance advice?

babcat49 asked:

My son (19) hit a parked car in our neighborhood. We are trying to decide if it is better to pay for the damages to car that he hit ($2500) without going through our insurance company or to report it to our company. The person’s car that he hit is willing to let us pay out of pocket. My son had a previous at-fault accident and has 2 points now. His car is totaled. Concern is how much our insurance rates will go up and is it possible they will cancel our policy. (Money is coming out of his savings and he is bus bound).
We have USAA auto insurance and the deductible is $500.

How could we make 500k a year and still craping by?

loselose asked:

I am so puzzled as to my family situation, we make about 500k a year and are still living paycheck to paycheck. Mostly i will blame the tax. after 45% tax, we are only left with 320k, after medical insurance and retirement plan savings, we are left with 260k a year. Sounds like a lot, after house/auto insurance, pest control and other necessary cost for the house, we are left with 200k a year.
That devides up to 16k a month, we have 2 kids in day care, a hight mortgage, 2 car loans, dry cleaning bills and bunch of other misc stuff. We are left with nothing at the end of the year and we can’t even afford to go on a vacation.

I feel like such a failure as a wife and mom…my financial advisor just tells me to cut back, but after viewing my monthly budget, he can’t tell me what could be cut out. So really no advise at all…

Fellow American households, what am i doing wrong!?!?!?
I have mortgage and car loans, and no other debt. I am very concious with the interests we pay, so i try to eliminate debt when i can. I do have a detailed budget down to the phone bill every month, but i think i need to work on it more to identify the things that we don’t need or could cut back. I can’t save any money but i am putting away 500/month/child for college fund. I just feel like I am trying to do the right things and it’s just never enough.

I am twenty years old, I do not have a college degree of any kind, I’ve worked as a file clerk with the same company for 3 years. I have a car. I want to move away from here but I have no clue how to relocate and establish myself. Any tips or personal experience anyone wants to share?

Auto Insurance – new driver on a permit?

Pipe F asked:

My 16 yr old has her permit – she needs to drive to get the required hours. On inquiry, my insurance company wants 1500 bucks (Michigan ) to add her to one of (a 98 CRV ) my vehicles. Plain extortion if you ask me. What are my options? I don’t have named exclusions on my policy – can she drive without being a named or unnamed driver for that matter – and still be covered? I want her to drive – but that’s crazy money that I don’t have. Anyone have some good tips for me?

sbsurfr78 asked:

I’m a 27 year-old full-time college student in CA. Needless to say, at my age, I don’t receive financial assistance from my parents. I have been seeking employment, but have found it to be very difficult to get hired whle attending school. I have qualified for grants, but will not receive them until the Fall 2008 semester. I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll be able to get a job on campus next semester, but if not, what should I do? With rent, cell phone, gas prices, health insurance, auto insurance, etc, I’m barely hanging onto what’s left of my savings. Should I take out a student loan? What have all you students in my position done?
Thanks for the answers! To give you more detail, I have already applied to 75-100 places, including retail. Many of the places state that I’m overqualified (I was an I.T. manager for 7 years). The one place I haven’t applied at yet is restaurants..The job market is terrible here in Southern CA. I’m not whining, just sharing info so that you can better answer the question. Thanks!

How To End Child Support Arguments?

Posted by: Pety Smith    in Insurance

LsMommie asked:

I am a Mom who receives child support. I take the check, deposit into a specific account for my daughter and use it to pay for afterschool care, camp, clothes, books, toys, birthday parties & gifts, etc. All for her. I haven’t changed an auto pay from the account for auto insurance – which I do pay back into the account, or into her savings account. All of my househould expenses are paid through my account with my new husband.

Our agreement states my ex is to pay 50% for agreed upon extra curricular expenses. Recently he “decided” he isn’t going to pay this anymore. My Ex uses every conversation about money into an opportunity to be verbally abusive to me. It’s become too much to deal with, and the stress has started to effect my daughter where he tells her she needs this and that and Mommy should do/get/buy/pay for whatever.

Is there a way I can stop the verbal abuse?
Do I need to get the courts involved?

Laura Buckley asked:

Ever wonder if you pay too much for your car insurance? Surprisingly most people feel that they do so you’re not alone. Trying to decipher insurance can be confusing and some people feel a bit intimidated when it comes to looking at their policy. With so many options to insurance and policies on the market theses days how do you know for sure who to select and what type of coverage is actually best for you?

Well first thing is first, in order to help you get the lowest rate possible to cover you for the car you are driving you must first understand and learn about the factors that could be affecting your premium. So many things come into play with that. Insurance companies just don’t pull numbers out of thin are and then say there you have it. Insurance carriers do actually factor in quite a bit to determine the risk they are to assume with you.

The main point here is for you to understand what those factors are and then learn how use those factors to tip the scale in your favor. Does that make sense to you? Well it should because it’s that simple. What auto insurance means in the most simplest of terms is protection. Protection is the peace of mind you pay for just incase you have a collision with a guard rail and want to have your car repaired or worse, involved in an auto accident with another vehicle and need medical attention.

Your current and past driving record is what gets looked at first with insurers. I hope that is no surprise to you. Insurers do this to estimate their risk for insuring you. Sometimes you need to turn the tables and see what it means for a company and what it does t them. What an insurer looks for when they scan your driving record history is:

1. At-fault accidents usually within the last three to five years.

2. Traffic violations usually within the last three to five years.

3. Claims made by you, usually within the last three to five years.

Know this for sure that if you’ve received marks or blemishes against your driving record, you can be assured that you’ll be paying more for your auto insurance because of that. The good news is that this doesn’t last forever. After a few years of hopefully driving good and you’ve cleared up any issues you can start to regain a positive rating on your insurance.

Even though you may have had some blemishes it doesn’t mean that you have to pay through the roof with premiums. Companies vary and so do their rates. Always shop around and compare rates and services. Don’t assume that you are always going to pay for more than you should. Companies will compete to get your business.
