What is the best way to legally get my car back from my ex girlfriend in another state?

Sean K asked:

OK so this is the story. sad but true.

About a year and a half ago my girlfriend (at the time) named Amber, and I purchased a 2005 dodge stratus from a car dealership. The car was purchased through an auto loan. On this loan I am the primary signer, and Amber is the co-signer.

6 months later give or take, Amber and I decided to go our separate ways, ie breakup. At this time we were both living in Connecticut. Amber wanted the car, and since I didn’t want two cars, we agreed that she would take the dodge stratus back to her hometown in New York. As part of this verbal agreement Amber was going to remove the loan from my name, and get the car registered and insured in New York.

Almost a year later now. Amber has not been able to remove my name from the auto loan, and the car still remains registered and insured under my name. Payments have been repeatably late (albeit still up to date). Although I was growing increasingly more and more frustrated about this situation, I was repeatedly made the promise that soon the car would be removed from my name.

The tipping point in this situation came two weeks ago. I received an email saying that the car’s insurance had been canceled due to non-payment. So now the car is in a lapse of insurance. I tried to renew the insurance only to find out that Amber has a suspended license and they couldn’t! To top off everything the very next day I found out that $400 dollars in back property taxes were due on the Dodge stratus and was forced to pay it in order to renew my own car registration.

Needless to say, I became very frustrated with this seemingly bad situation in which I was losing three things. My credit was being hurt, I was paying out of pocket for taxes that Amber would not pay, and also fines from the DMV for being in lapse of insurance, and also possibly hurting my own insurance rating for being in lapse of insurance thus making it possibly more difficult for my car to be insured.

I called Amber and said, “this is it, you have had more than enough time to remedy this situation you have a week to find another signer for the loan and get this car out from under me.”

Still nothing has happened, and the car is in her hometown, uninsured in my name and registered in connecticut. I have told her that I will come get the car and forget about the $600 hundred dollars out of pocket for taxes and fines that she has caused but she says that she refuses to give me the keys. If I make the 20 hour round trip to get the car I want to make damn sure that I will return with it.

Basically my question is how do i proceed to legally obtain the keys from Amber and take the car back to Connecticut where it seemingly belongs. Who do I need to contact to get help?! Also, am i being unreasonable or is this girl being ridiculous?!

USAA offering discount on insurance based on what services you currently have?

? Alexis B ? asked:

I currently have a checking account and an auto insurance policy with USAA. They offer a discount on insurance based on what and how many products and services you have with them, therefore, I am thinking about opening a credit card with them (I do not plan on using it).

I currently have an AMEX with a $6,000 limit and currently have a balance of $2000

I also have a Capital One Visa with a $500 limit and have a balance of $300.

My credit score is 705.

I already have 2 other checking accounts (Wachovia & ING) and another higher interest savings with ING, so I don’t want any more banking services…and I don’t plan on making any major purchases for another year or so (buying a house).

Will it bring my score down considering the new inquiry and new card? Is it worth it to open a card and save a couple bucks on car insurance, or should I just leave it be?

Should I use my savings to pay down debt?

ThatGirl asked:

I’m a college student getting ready to transfer to a 4-year college in the fall. I currently work two jobs. My goal by the time I leave for school is to pay my auto loan off and to pay for the full six months of car insurance (if I can save for 3 months it’s fine with me…at least it’s something). I have about $2900 without interest that’s left to pay on my auto loan. The cost of insurance for the full term is going to be about $1600. I currently pay around $425-450 on the auto loan each month and $288 for insurance each month.
The problem is that with my second job they are cutting back on hours and I really don’t know if I will be let go. I have about $1000 in savings and being in my situation this money is basically my “stuff happens…i will fall back on this” money. I am in the works of finding a new second job but I need some advice just in case things dont go the way I want it to.
Will the payment per month on the auto loan is $246 a month so I decided to pay $425-450 a month so that I can pay the loan off quicker…and I really do need the car because I have to transport myself to school. The reason why my insurance is so high is because I’m still classified as a “new driver”

This is a personal topic, but I’m hoping someone can share.

I’m preparing to own a home in the next 12 months, and I’m a little green… I would like to see someone list their monthly expenses, and income. How much should I be able to save each month? I am single, and make $75K, is this not enough for a home in a decent area? If so, what is a decent area? I see medium incomes for long island towns lower than my income and I cannot figure out how people are owning a home?!

If possible, can you break your monthly finances as follows;

Net income monthly
Mortgage
Taxes
Car
Insurance
Gas/Oil
Car Maint
Auto Gas
Phone/Internet/Cable
Credit Cards
Dining out
Food for one person (divide by fam members)
Everything else
net SAVINGS per month (if any)

Thanks!

Are You Paying Too Much For Auto Insurance? Ways To Find Out If You Are

Laura Buckley asked:

Ever wonder if you pay too much for your car insurance? Surprisingly most people feel that they do so you’re not alone. Trying to decipher insurance can be confusing and some people feel a bit intimidated when it comes to looking at their policy. With so many options to insurance and policies on the market theses days how do you know for sure who to select and what type of coverage is actually best for you?

Well first thing is first, in order to help you get the lowest rate possible to cover you for the car you are driving you must first understand and learn about the factors that could be affecting your premium. So many things come into play with that. Insurance companies just don’t pull numbers out of thin are and then say there you have it. Insurance carriers do actually factor in quite a bit to determine the risk they are to assume with you.

The main point here is for you to understand what those factors are and then learn how use those factors to tip the scale in your favor. Does that make sense to you? Well it should because it’s that simple. What auto insurance means in the most simplest of terms is protection. Protection is the peace of mind you pay for just incase you have a collision with a guard rail and want to have your car repaired or worse, involved in an auto accident with another vehicle and need medical attention.

Your current and past driving record is what gets looked at first with insurers. I hope that is no surprise to you. Insurers do this to estimate their risk for insuring you. Sometimes you need to turn the tables and see what it means for a company and what it does t them. What an insurer looks for when they scan your driving record history is:

1. At-fault accidents usually within the last three to five years.

2. Traffic violations usually within the last three to five years.

3. Claims made by you, usually within the last three to five years.

Know this for sure that if you’ve received marks or blemishes against your driving record, you can be assured that you’ll be paying more for your auto insurance because of that. The good news is that this doesn’t last forever. After a few years of hopefully driving good and you’ve cleared up any issues you can start to regain a positive rating on your insurance.

Even though you may have had some blemishes it doesn’t mean that you have to pay through the roof with premiums. Companies vary and so do their rates. Always shop around and compare rates and services. Don’t assume that you are always going to pay for more than you should. Companies will compete to get your business.

Car Insurance Question?

Posted by: Low Cost Auto Insurance Guru    in Insurance

auto insurance requirements
Mary Beth asked:

Hi. I bought a car yesterday. It is the second car to be financed in my name. I own the car, but it is my boyfriend’s car. When I call my agent to get the insurance on it– how will it work? Will we be able to have him covered as the primary operator on the car even though I am the owner? In Ohio you are required to carry auto insurance, so I just want to make sure he will be able, under one policy, to meet that requirement and have his full coverage on the new car.
