Gap insurance: A type of insurance offered to auto lease and loan customers that owe more on a car than it’s worth. Gap insurance pays the difference between what you owe and the actual cash value of a vehicle in the event the car is stolen or destroyed.

High-risk driver: If you have accidents or tickets on your driving record, many insurance companies will classify you as a high-risk driver and charge you more for insurance.

Liability insurance: This part of an auto insurance policy covers the injuries and damage you cause to other drivers and their vehicles when you are at fault in an accident. If you are taken to court, liability coverage will apply to your legal costs. Most states require drivers to carry liability coverage. The amount of coverage varies by state.

Limits: The maximum amount of benefits your insurer will pay for a loss as designated in your insurance policy.

If your car is “totaled” after an accident, did you know how your insurance company determines your car’s present value? The answer may surprise you. Auto-insurance companies don’t use the standard Kelley Blue Book or National Association of Automobile Dealers value. Instead, each company has its own proprietary list of car values, and most have specialized software for valuing cars in each region. They take into consideration the car’s mileage and pre-accident condition.

The insurance company may also ask local dealers what they’d charge for a similar replacement car. However, the insurer will consider quotes from suburban towns as reasonable estimates, even if you live in the city. You might have to drive several hours to reach the cheapest dealer, just to save the insurance company money. And they might be quoted a better deal than you could get if you walked onto the lot.

Low Cost Auto Insurance Guru Tip: If you disagree with your insurance company’s value determination, don’t despair, there are several things you can still to prove a higher value

Next time, get gap insurance. It will pay for the difference between what an insurer will cover and what you owe, which can be several thousand dollars.

Gap Insurance - Should You get It?

Gap insurance is an additional insurance policy that is usually tacked on to your monthly lease payment or (finance payment if you are financing your car). Usually you don’t even know you have it unless you look at the dreaded fine print in your finance contract, and if its there, its probably already too late to change or replace it with another Gap Insurance policy of your choice.

What Is Gap Insurance?

Gap Insurance will insure you for the difference between what one would owe on a vehicle and what an insurance company says it’s worth. This insurance is a must for someone who is considering purchasing a new vehicle since a new vehicle depreciates right after it is driven off the dealer’s lot. Depending on the policy, Gap insurance usually covers accidents and thefts, but not all policies are the same so it’s a good idea to evaluate the coverages being offered before you sign a lease or finance agreement.

Is Gap insurance required?

No. Most lending companies who finance cars do require full coverage insurance but not Gap insurance, so the owner would have to pay the depreciation difference if they had a total loss of their vehicle and chose not to add Gap insurance to their policy.

Before you sign a lease or finance agreement on your new or used car, please make sure that Gap Insurance IS NOT added to your contract with the finance company.
